# Execution

On a perp exchange, the exchange applies every fill and liquidation itself. On openPunt, a settled oracle game does nothing to your position on its own. Someone has to send an **execute** transaction, which applies the game's result: it opens the position, closes it, liquidates it, or cancels the game if one of the protections trips.

## Who executes

Anyone can execute. The executor earns a small amount of ETH that you fund up front: with your request for the opening game, and with your close for the closing game. See [Gas](https://docs.openoracle.org/punt/fees.md#gas).

Typically, MEV bots execute settled games within seconds. If they do not, the Positions panel shows an **Execute** button a couple of blocks after the game becomes eligible to settle, and you can execute it yourself.

## The 3-minute window

A game must be executed within 3 minutes of becoming eligible to settle. After that, executing it cancels the game instead of applying it, so a price from before an outage cannot be used after it. See [Oracle risks](https://docs.openoracle.org/punt/oracle-risks.md#sequencer-outages).

* An opening refunds both sides.
* A close or liquidation leaves the position open, and any close request is cleared.

Games reported from 60 hours after [maturity](https://docs.openoracle.org/punt/maturity.md) onward are exempt from this window.

## Unexecuted games block new ones

A position can only have one oracle game at a time. A game that has not been executed stays attached to the position, and no new game can start until it is. If a game misses the 3-minute window, the button reads **Reset**: executing it cancels the stale game and frees the position, so you can close again.

If an opening game runs longer than 30 minutes, the button reads **Refund (wallet)** instead, and returns both sides' margin.
